Special Education Program and the Individualized Education Program

Narbonne High School Special Education students may be enrolled in one of several programs, including: Community Based Instruction, Visually Impaired program, Special Day Class including Learning Handicapped, Resource, and/or the Adapted Physical Education program. Because the Special Education program is extensive, and because students are placed in classrooms according to the least restrictive environment possible, teachers are required to sit in at IEP meetings on occasion along with administrators, counselors, parents, students and other support staff.  Paid coverage is provided.

Narbonne High School also has itinerant teachers who provide specialized services to students with speech, vision, hearing or other health problems that may interfere with learning.  Teachers should consult with the School Nurse or the Special Education Coordinator if a student appears to have need of special services

Narbonne also has students with physical issues that require the general education teacher’s attention.  These students may not need the services of Special Education but instead have a 504 Plan to accommodate the instruction to their special needs.  Copies of 504 Plans are sent to the corresponding teachers at the beginning of each semester.  It is the teacher’s responsibility to follow these plans, which are protected by federal legislation (IDEA—Individuals with Disabilities Education Act).

Whether students have an IEP (Individual Education Plan for Special Education students) or a 504 Plan (for those in general education), teachers are required by law to follow the modifications listed in these documents.
