Homework Policy

Homework is a necessary part of a pupil’s educational program. Meaningful homework is reasonable and is related to class work and the goals of the course of study; emphasizes quality rather than quantity; and is consistent with the grade level and maturity of the pupils. Assignments should be purposeful and clear and should be based on an analysis of the needs of the class, with modifications for individuals when feasible. Homework should include a review of all class notes and activities daily for a student to identify areas where additional explanation may be required from the teacher (Bulletin No, 3491).

Student’s Responsibility
The student’s responsibilities are to keep an accurate record of assignments, to have necessary materials at hand, to follow study techniques outlined by the teacher, to apply and practice skills learned class, to strive for the best quality of work of which s/he is capable and to complete and turn in assignments on time.

Teacher’s Responsibility
The teacher’s responsibilities are to furnish specific, reasonable assignments which are related to class work, to make materials available, to make certain that pupils understand the assignment and the reasons for it, to teach necessary study skills, and to utilize, evaluate and return homework in a timely fashion.

Parent’s Responsibility
The parent’s responsibilities are to encourage systematic study, to show interest in assignments, to commend satisfactory performance and to provide conditions conducive to home study.

Implementation
Recommended minimum for Narbonne High School is two to three hours per week per academic class. Homework is not required to be specifically assigned to certain days but may be scheduled, when appropriate, over an extended period of time, which may include weekends.

Guidelines for Planning
The following recommendations and should be considered when planning for homework assignments:

  • Homework is assigned only for subjects that have been taught and learned sufficiently. The student then performs the work correctly rather than reinforcing incorrect work.
  • Copying of material is discouraged.
  • Assignments are thoroughly explained and clearly understood, and students know due dates.
  • Homework is meant to reinforce, extend, enrich and/or strengthen skills.
  • Extracurricular activities of the student are considered and assignments are made sufficiently in advance to allow time for the student’s out-of-school responsibilities and schedules.
  • The assignments are reasonable in length, content, and required resources.
  • Homework is not assigned as a punishment.
  • Homework assignments are directly related to classroom work.
  • Teachers are aware that in some homes, home study may not be possible, or resource materials (newspapers, encyclopedias, computers etc.) may not be available.
  • Homework is an important resource in helping students to learn.
  • Assignments are not an additional burden to the teacher, but of assistance in making an assessment of the student’s overall performance.
  • Special interest projects may be an outgrowth of classroom instruction or may extend and enrich specific interests.
  • Books and other materials required for assignments are provided.
  • Assignments are representative of the school and of the quality of the instructional program.
  • Homework assignments, once completed, are recognized as an indication of the student’s progress through application to classroom activities. Some teachers place an “OK” or their initials at the top of returned work to indicate that they have read the material.
  • Certain homework assignments require only acknowledgement, while other assignments may require correcting.
  • Simple correction techniques, with a minimum amount of instructional time, are best. These techniques may include correction/checking by students, peers or teachers.
  • Homework may be checked during a specific time or during appropriate instruction. The teacher should review all assignments periodically and inform parents when class members repeatedly fail to return or complete assignments.

Marking of Written Homework
When homework is assigned to help students maintain and improve their learning, the results are reflected in student achievement. Failure to return assignments could be reflected in marks for Work Habits on the report card.
