Class Coverage

Types of Coverage
There are two types of class coverage assignments:

  • Paid Assignment
This is authorized when the district cannot provide a substitute for a regular teacher who is absent for illness, personal necessity, bereavement, must leave the school because of illness or emergency, or is on district authorized business providing a paid coverage.

If a substitute arrives 20 minutes late or half way through the assigned period, the covering teacher has the option to remain in the classroom the rest of the period for pay or release the class to the substitute. In either case the covering teacher will be paid for covering the class.
  • Unpaid Assignment
This involves coverage for a regular teacher who is away on school business or an athletic event. Field trips are covered within the department or SLC.

Assignments are made on a rotational basis distributing paid and unpaid coverages each period. Some teachers may wish to volunteer for frequent paid assignments out of rotation. If this is the case, please notify the School Administrative Assistant who will see that you are offered this opportunity for extra pay first.

During special occasions or emergencies all personnel may be called upon to cover classes or combine classes. All non-register carrying teachers who do not have specific classroom assignments will be asked to cover in an emergency "on call" situation.

Conference Periods/Class Coverage
Teachers must inform the School Administrative Assistant of their whereabouts during conference periods for the purposes of class coverage and parent conferences.

It is necessary occasionally for teachers to cover their colleagues’ classes because of conflicting activities or emergencies. Records are kept of coverages and are assigned equally to teachers.

Teachers who need substitute coverage due to personal reasons, and who received the Principal’s approval, must secure their own substitutes and inform the Main Office.

Unattended Classes or Students
Classes may not be left unattended at any time. Students may not to be left in any room or facility without supervision by certificated staff. The training teacher must supervise student teachers. Teachers who leave classes unattended will not be paid for that period of time.
