Classroom Information

Room Assignments
The SLC Council, in consultation with the APSCS, makes regular room assignments.

An administrator must approve requests for temporary use of rooms or other facilities.  Teachers should place a sign on the door indicating where the class may be found whenever taking a class elsewhere during a regularly assigned period.

Classroom Security
Classroom doors and windows must be locked when not in use.  No students should enter or remain in a room unless a teacher is present.  Under no circumstances should a student be given school keys.  Money, school keys, valuables, hall passes and teachers’ belongings should not be left unsecured in the teacher’s desk, cupboards, or closets.

When meeting with students before or after school hours, doors should be left open.  Teachers are discouraged from meeting with students one-on-one before or after school hours.  Teachers are also discouraged from remaining onsite after administrative offices are closed.

Change of Meeting Place
When a class is taken from its regularly scheduled room, a notice must be posted on the classroom door and the main office must be notified.

Care of Classroom, School Property and Housekeeping
Everything in a classroom is the property of the Board of Education.  It is the teacher’s responsibility to know what is in the room and to give all property the best of care. Periodic inventories will be requested.

Students are responsible and liable for the care of school property.  The law provides that students and/or their parents must pay for defacing of equipment, books, or other school materials.

Custodial services are limited.  It is helpful if all teachers engage their students in keeping their rooms clean and neat as possible.

If custodial service is unsatisfactory, maintenance is needed, or repairs are necessary, notify the plant manager and/or administrator in writing.

Room Preparations for Summer Vacation
To have a complete summer clean up by the custodial staff, teachers must clear chalkboards and bulletin boards of all material, remove all books and other materials form the bookcases, send books to textbook room for inventory, clear teacher’s desk, table tops and open shelves. This preparation must be complete by the last day of the spring semester.

Cabinets may be used to store equipment and materials during the summer months, but all textbooks must be returned to the Textbook Room for inventory and determination of student stop clearances.

Donations
A signed letter must accompany donations from the donor. The letter should describe the items involved, estimate their value, and provide the donor’s name, address, and phone number. The donation should be made to “Los Angeles Unified School District for use at Fairfax High School.” These donation letters must be dated.

You must provide a copy of the donation letter to the Assistant Principal in charge of facilities and get his permission before accepting the donation. If the donation involves computer-related equipment or software, you must also provide a copy of the letter and any accompanying purchase receipts to the technology coordinator.

If the donation involves cash or negotiable securities such as stocks and bonds, you must contact the school principal and advise her of the donation in advance.
Most equipment that people or businesses want to donate is obsolete. Much of it is in need of repair. Generally, used equipment is more trouble than it is worth. Almost all of it ends up in the junk pile because we don’t have funds or spare parts to make needed repairs. Make sure equipment really does have function and value before you accept it. If you are not sure, just say “thank you, but no.”
A letter from the school signed by the principal should acknowledge donations.

Donations of Computers
Every donated computer must be accompanied by donated software, including an operating system. This software must be listed in the donation letter. A copy of the sales receipt or purchase order for the software must accompany the donation. If there is no record of the software’s purchase, we cannot use the computer and should not accept it.

Discarding Old Equipment (Salvage)
Q:     I found an old broken down typewriter in my room. It’s in my way. I need to get rid of it. A student in my homeroom says his mother really needs a typewriter. He says he’ll take it and get it fixed. Is it okay to give this worthless old machine to him, or should I just throw it away?

A.     The answer to both questions and to similar questions is, sad to say, “no.” You can’t give old equipment away, and you shouldn’t just throw it in the trash.

There is a process called salvage that you must go through to get rid of old equipment. All this equipment belongs to LAUSD, which means it belongs to the taxpayers. As an employee, you do not have the right to give equipment away, sell it, or exchange it, no matter how worthless the equipment may seem to you. Also, many times old equipment contains parts made up of hazardous materials. It is important that these are recycled safely or disposed of properly.

So, what do you do?  You must fill out a form called a salvage form. The form has all sorts of complexity to it, as LAUSD forms often do, but you only have to fill out three columns: (1) the quantity, (2) the description, and (3) the unit price. If you don’t know the unit price, take a guess. Putting $1 for the unit price is perfectly acceptable if you think the equipment is worthless, but you must put a price. Zero is not acceptable. Finally, make sure you put the date on the form and—most importantly—include the room number where the item is located. You put this room number just right of LA High’s address near the top of the form. You also need to put your name on the form. You can just print your name at the top in the margin above the organization code.

Once you fill out the form, including your room number or the location of the items and your name, send the form to the school’s plant manager. You can just put it in his mailbox in the main office.

Keep a copy of the form in case the original gets lost or misplaced. If a custodian does not remove the equipment from your room in a reasonable time…four or five days…contact the plant manager again or speak to the Assistant Principal in charge of facilities. If the equipment is large, bolted down, or otherwise difficult to move, LAUSD movers will be sent out to pick it up. This can take six weeks or more, so be patient.
