Responsibilities of the Classroom Teacher
- Plan for each preparation period being taught. An administrator may request proof of lesson planning.
- Teach in the most effective ways possible, aligning curriculum, California State Standards and assessment.
- Implement District’s goals and objectives.
- Maintain adequate and up-to-date records (especially roll book) for all students under their direct supervision.
- Provide a class syllabus to students and parents for all classes at the beginning of the school year.
- Maintain communication with parents/guardians in order to promote parental involvement. Keep a record of your parent contacts and their disposition in your roll book.
- Refer students with special needs to the appropriate offices.
- Be an active supervisor of students wherever they may be – classroom, halls, cafeteria or grounds.
- Participate in the determination of policies and the development of rules and regulations for the school as part of the LEARN process.
- Maintain classrooms conducive to good learning.
- Attend all required professional meetings, including Back to School Night, and Open House and PHBAO Parent Conference nights.
Roll Books
- A minimum of at least one grade or evaluation for each week of the semester must be entered and clearly labeled in your roll book for each student. Two grades are highly recommended.
- All grades and attendance must be kept current and entered in blue or black ink only. Erasures and “white outs” are not acceptable.
- Any change in a mark should show a line through the original grade with the new grade entered next to it.
- An administrator checks roll books once each semester to ensure proper procedures.
- Electronic roll books may be used in lieu of manual roll books as long as they contain all of the required information.
- For additional information, see an administrator.
Attendance and Punctuality
Narbonne High School has a Holding Room where tardy students are detained and disciplined. When the tardy bell rings, teachers should close their doors and send tardy students to the Holding Room. The Holding Room teacher will notify parents and administer Progressive Discipline. Students must be allowed an opportunity to make up work missed due to tardies.
Student Marks
- All progress, mid-term and final grade reports are prepared from computer-generated rosters.
- Teachers are expected to meet all deadlines, as there are strict time-lines for meeting District-mandated reporting periods.
- Teachers are reminded that students are not to be given a failing final mark unless the parents and student have been given appropriate advanced notification:
- Via the five-week and fifteen-week computer generated progress report.
- An individual unsatisfactory notice, Special Report to Parents (Form 34-H-51), mailed home or given to the student.
- A parent conference, by phone or in person (documented in the roll book).
- Teachers must make some notation in the roll book to document parental contact.
It should be noted that a mark of “D” is not considered an adequate warning to the parent or guardian. However, if the “D” appears on a form with the written comment, “In danger of failing”, the parent will have been adequately notified.
Complimentary Notices (Form 34-14-50) should be issued to those students who are doing an extraordinary job or have shown excellent improvement in a particular skill or subject.
Marks of a student transferring to Narbonne High School from an accredited school should be taken at face value and should become a proportionate part of the student’s final mark. Check-in grades are indicated on program cards if initially available. If received later, they are available from the Credit Clerk in the Counseling Office.
Seating Charts
Seating charts are provided in the roll book, or separately, and should be kept up to date and available in case of absence.
Class Dismissal
The bell is an indication to the teacher that it is time to dismiss the class. This should be done in an orderly fashion when it is determined that the room is in good condition. Do not dismiss students before the bell rings or automatically upon the ringing of the bell.
Classroom Standards
Students should be in their regularly assigned seats, ready to work, when the tardy bell begins to ring. NO FOOD OR DRINKS ARE ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOMS. Students should have all necessary supplies for each class. Students are not allowed to leave the room during the class period except in emergency situations.
Hall Passes
Teachers are reminded that students must be in the classroom for learning to take place. Students should be encouraged to take care of personal business before or after school, during nutrition or lunch or between classes. Hall passes must be securely stored and used only for the purpose intended. Hall passes should not be given out during the first ten and the last ten minutes of class.
Student Parties
No parties shall be organized, planned or held during a regular educational period at any time. No outside food may be brought to classrooms during the school day.
