Counselor Richard Cody
I am Richard Cody, counselor for English Language Learner students, who are in beginning ESL classes or who have not as yet passed the CELDT test for re-designation. I graduated from San Pedro High School in the early fifties (My wife graduated from Narbonne High School at the same time.) and then enlisted in the US Air Force and was assigned to the intelligence division where I stjudied Russian. I attended UCLA in the late fifties and early sixties and did graduate work at Pepperdine University. I was a counselor at Gardena High School for 35 years and retired in 1996. I was asked to return to counseling at Narbonne High School for a temporary assignment that has now lasted five years. I really have enjoyed working with students and staff here and consider both magnificent groups of people.

I was married for thirty-five years. My wife passed away three years ago. We have six adult children and fifteen grandchildren all of whom I adore and with whom I hope to spend more time when I retire again. I also discovered how much more fun it is to be a grandparent than to e parent with all the responsibilities that entails. I can especially understand the difficulties that any parent faces in this era raising adolescents with the many problems and challenges which they confront. At my age, nearly 72, I like the more sedentary pursuits such as gardening and reading although my doctors say that I must exercise daily to keep fit which I do by walking thirty to forty minutes a day.

Along with teachers and administrators, I am the counselor for the new small learning community "The School of Technical Education" which includes Drafting, Wood, Horticulture, and Computers. All these disciplines are significantly interrelated and, along with the solid academic program planned, should provide a solid education for further study in any of these interconnected fields in a college, university, or technical school. This school will also be working with industry to ensure that students will have entry level jobs available as well as being able to use these skills in future employment. The school will also help students with scholarship preparation and applications to colleges and technical schools. This is a concept about which I am extraordinarily excited as it offers a unique experience for students and staff to work together in am small setting.
